Personal Fundraising Page for Sandy Lacy and Callie & Alex Brackett
Ben Lacy was a special man in our lives for many obvious reasons. He made us laugh (often at jokes that we probably shouldn’t have laughed at, although Ben could always get away with just about anything). He made us think. He made us care. And it is in the spirit of that last quality that we encourage you to join our campaign.
Ben fought a daily battle with type 1 diabetes (a.k.a., juvenile diabetes) for over 20 years, with his typical mixture of grace, humility and good humor. He lost that battle in 2012, after countless needle pricks, blood sugar checks, insulin shots and the highs and lows that (literally and figuratively) mark life with diabetes. Alex and the rest of the family became actively involved in JDRF because we believe in its mission to raise funds directed towards researching and delivering a cure for type 1 diabetes. It is a goal we had hoped would be accomplished in Ben’s lifetime, and believe wholeheartedly is on the verge of happening.
As a reflection of Ben’s spirit and the family’s commitment to this cause, the JDRF has graciously chosen us to be the honorees at this year’s 15th Annual JDRF Gala. The theme is “Time for a Cure,” and the event will be held at the historic Jefferson Hotel on February 28, 2015. It is humbling to be so honored, and is also motivating us to help ensure the event lives up to our memory of Ben—and his love of a good party! We invite you to join us in supporting this event, and ask you to consider making a monetary gift in Ben’s and the family’s honor to the Gala.
Our family is not alone in this fight. A new case of diabetes is diagnosed every 30 seconds in the United States, with more than 1.9 million people joining the fight each year. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for this deadly disease by raising funds for research.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $568 million in scientific research in 17 countries. For more information, please visit www.jdrf.org.
