Promise to Remember Lucy Eovino for JDRF!
I
sat shell-shocked in the Watauga ER on December 31, 2010, when the
physician diagnosed my daughter Lucy with Type 1 Diabetes. He informed
me that there was no cure, and this disease would be something she would
live with for the rest of her life, or until a cure is found. I sobbed
every time the nurses came into to check her blood sugar and administer
insulin shots. I could not fathom how we were going to live with this.
There
was a beacon of hope waiting for us back in Richmond, and that was the
Central Virginia JDRF. JDRF connected us to the resources we needed, to
other families, to support groups, and most of all to its mission of
funding Type 1 Diabetes research and finding ways to better treat,
prevent and cure T1D. From that day, our family has become very involved
with JDRF through its Walk to Find a Cure and Outreach programs. We
have also participated in JDRF Advocacy on Capitol Hill in Washington,
DC.
For
2 1/2 years, Lucy pricked her fingers six to ten times a day and gave
herself five shots a day. She started wearing an insulin pump in 2013,
and last year she began wearing a continuous glucose monitor to help us
better track her trends in blood sugar, preventing complications from
serious highs or lows. Today, Lucy is a thriving fourteen year old who
loves to read, ski and and play the piano. But every day she has to
walk a tightrope, administering insulin through her pump and checking
her blood sugar to make sure it is calibrated with her CGM. Every single
day. She can NEVER take a day off or vacation from it.
I
am deeply honored to be serving as Procurement Chair for the Central VA
JDRF's 15th Annual Gala, being held at the historic Jefferson Hotel on February 28th.
This year's theme is "Time for a Cure," and with the medical
advancements we are seeing - whether it's the Artificial Pancreas (which
we hope has FDA approval by the time Lucy is in college) or
transplanting beta cells - the time for a cure has arrived. Our family
truly believes that Lucy will see a cure in her lifetime. The funding we
need now is so critical for advancing this groundbreaking research. We
can't do it without your help.
Any
amount you can donate to Promise to Remember Lucy for JDRF is greatly
appreciated. We thank you for your support of Lucy, and of all people
suffering from Type 1 Diabetes.
