This year our family has volunteered to lead the effort to “Fund A Cure” for Type 1 Diabetes, which will support JDRF’s mission to cure Type 1 Diabetes. ALL proceeds will go directly to fund research not only for a cure, but also diabetes’ many complications. We have been involved with JDRF for a long time, but have decided to take on this major role now for two reasons: 1) Recent breakthroughs make finding a cure truly within our grasp, and 2) With each passing year that we care for Ned and Bridgette, our worries concerning their long term health grow heavier and heavier. As a parent, the real possibility of one or both of them struggling with a serious heart condition, kidney disease, or vision impairment later in life is terrifying. The sooner a cure is found, the better chance they have of living a long and healthy life.
There are many reasons to be hopeful - just recently a JDRF-funded partner ViaCyte, has for the first time ever implanted a person with type 1 diabetes (T1D) with an experimental encapsulated cell replacement therapy called VC-01™. Encapsulated cell replacement therapies have the potential to fundamentally transform the management of T1D by restoring a person’s independence from insulin injections. Essentially a CURE! The stem cell-derived cells are designed to replace a person’s lost insulin-producing ability while being protected from the ongoing T1D autoimmune attack.
Our goal is to raise over $400,000 with $50,000 of that coming directly from our join me campaign, in order to make a real impact for our children and the millions of others affected by this disease. We are hoping you will join us in our campaign, and get other folks to join in this fight for a cure. Millions of people are already affected by this disease, and millions more will be diagnosed in the near future. It’s Time for a Cure.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $568 million in scientific research in 17 countries. For more information, please visit www.jdrf.org.
